  • Petroleum sludge consists of heavy organic materials such as paraffin waxes, asphaltenes, resinous materials and other extraneous materials such as cotton pieces. Beside the organic materials, there is an inorganic substance as dust, scales and water.
  • There are many factors controlling the sludge formation in petroleum tanks. The most important one is the oxidation of organic materials present in the crude. The oxidation process occurs due to the change in the atmospheric temperature or due to the heating of the crude oils during pumping them in pipelines especially in winter. Also, due to the effect of some oxidizing fungi on the organic petroleum compounds, in addition, it may be due to the electrostatic charge formed on pumping the products. These electrical charges tend to oxidize the petroleum components.
  • Coagulation of heavy petroleum components with water is another factor leading to sludge formation.
  • This factor is demonstrated by the presence of water in emulsion phase with sludge in high percentage.
  • Sediments, Sand, Dust and Scales also are other factors encouraging the precipitation of the sludge and these shows in their high percentage in the sludge on analysis.
  • The precipitation of paraffin wax is also one of the most important factors that cause sludge formation. It is well known that the precipitated waxes are very difficult to re-dissolve in the liquid crude oil. Precipitation of waxes may be due to the difference in temperature between day and night which leads to separation of waxes in a sludge-form.
  • The variation of temperature between summer and winter also has the same effect on precipitation of waxes.
  • The interruption in the material balance due to the losses in the volatile components is another factor leading to the formation of sludge.
  • Some of the heavy components present in the crude oils such as asphaltenes, resins and polymeric compounds, tend to precipitate, thus disturb the material balance again.


Crude oil and their heavy fractions tend to deposit the so-called sludge. This sludge causes many troubles in handling of the crude oil whether in pipelines, storage tanks, or in the refinery towers. It leads to blockage of the pipelines especially in cold weather during transferring the crude oil through them, also causes blocking of the nozzles of burners in refineries and increasing the dead volume of storage oil tanks. Also, sludge precipitation interferes with accurate measurement of crude quantity, leading to serious problems in custody transfer.


Conventional sludge cleaning methods as a concept tends to remove the sludge out of the tank and dump it in the environment, generally require that tank to be taken out of service for three to four months. Sludge removal is usually difficult. The sludge disposal also causes many environmental problems. These considerations, along with the amount of labor required to carry out the cleaning of the tank, are the primary reasons why routine tank cleaning programs have never widely accepted by the industry. even modern technologies regardless whatever it is, simply it tends to make the sludge jumpable and move it from one spot to another without treatment , in the new destination , the problem circle life starts again.


Although the sludge treatment lies under the title of tank cleaning, but TTS noble technology is something advanced, it is the recovery of the hydrocarbons from the petroleum sludge and turn it back to crude oil within specs. The TTS process for sludge treatment time-frame for a crude oil storage tank is 4-6 weeks depending on the size of the tank and the sludge quantity. In emergency case during the dislodging process, the tank can be put back to operation within 10 minutes upon client request because the process is carried out while the tank is out of service but not isolated from the local pipeline network (online process). Gas separators can also be dislodged within 7-10 days according to the size using the same process. Even sludge accumulated in dumping pits can be converted to salable crude oil by using TTS method treatment solution).

Scope of Work for Oil Tanks/Tankers desludging and hydrocarbons recovery

Measure the level of sludge from different points and through some roof legs to calculate the quantity of sludge. (sludge survey and quantity estimating) Receiving the tank online and the designated work area for our equipment and machines. Hanging up our circuits around the tank using outlets, drains, on tank’s shell, also from the roof by removing a selected roof support and inserting 2” hoses through the legs sleeves. The contents of the storage tank are reduced to leave approximately a 50/50 mix of sludge and crude oil. When the temperature is raised, start the chemical injection within a dose range from 500 to 1000 ppm. The injected patented chemical (TTS-750) enhances the efficiency of the surface-active agent which disperses the sludge by batch process (layer by layer) Circulate the entire content to ensure the homogeneity of the entire tank contents. Settling will be done for the required time so that the water content is separated and drained from the tank. The batch is ready to be transferred to another tank chosen by the client with a blending ratio calculated by the quality control party which is the client’s laboratory in this case to ensure that the mixed output is strictly within the specifications limits of the client’s produced crude oil which confirmed by shipping analysis. The designated tank is now ready for a new batch and the steps (4 to 9) to be repeated till completing the recovery process and the tank to be handed over to the client.

Scope of Work for Cleaning of Separator/Vessels

Similar steps of the dislodging process to be applied on the vessel taking into consideration that it is case by case procedure according to the situation of the vessel after completing the dislodging procedure, the process of vessel cleaning (upon client’s request) as: Open manhole for ventilation. Open vessel drain. Remove the residuals from the bottom. Special precaution will take place before the vessel entry and during the cleaning procedures. Transfer the residuals to the dump area. Cleaning the entire body of the vessel by special detergents. Hand over the vessel after final cleaning to the client.
